Success means something different to different people but I think we can all agree that becoming an angry and super stressed person shouldn’t be in your game plan.
Having the ability to go for a run while other people sit in their car on the way to work or being in control of scheduling my personal time is definitely a measure of success for me in my life.
Let’s take a closer look at why some people become so angry and bitter over the course of a lifetime.
Here are some prime examples of thoughts that won’t serve us:
1. Self-fulfilling Prophecy
This is the expectation that similar things will happen to you in the future (a negative way to program your mind for future events).
If something unplanned happens, we have to be conscious of how we think about the situation.
Old Thought process: Of course, every time we have an audit, things get out of control and it turns into a disaster.
New Thought process: This wasn’t the ideal audit but we will get better because of it.
You will get what you ask for.
2. Assigned Meaning
We assign meanings all the time. A person is good or bad. A situation is good or bad. An outcome is good or bad (can turn into negative thought habits).
If something unexpected happens, we can make the decision to assign the best possible meaning. We can always look for the good in the bad.
Old thought process: That’s my luck. I cannot see a way out of this terrible situation.
New thought process: Wow, this was unexpected but there must be something I can learn from all of this.
Things are never as bad as they seem at first sight.
3. Personalization
This happens when we think that all bad outcomes are our fault (I am not good enough/smart enough syndrome).
If you receive news that something didn’t go according to plan, it doesn’t ultimately mean it is your fault.
Old thought process: It’s my fault. I am not good enough.
New thought process: Let’s explore why this happened and what we can learn from it.
It’s not about whose fault it was, it is about learning and growing.
Who would want to turn into the “successful” (wo)man in picture 1?
Life can be an emotional rollercoaster at times and it is important to have mental strategies in place to bounce back faster.
No amount of stress and/or bad incidents in your personal or professional life is worth risking your health and well-being!
Stay happy and healthy!
