Manufacturing Workforce Training Confidence

In my work as a leadership trainer and coach, I meet all kinds of people but when it comes to confidence, there are usually 2 groups.

  1. Some have too much (ego-driven)
  2. Others have little to none (low self-worth and low self-esteem)

Last year I spoke to 10 CEOs (different industries) to find out what they do to educate themselves. 4 CEOs were very humble. They see it as their responsibility to get better if they want the team to get better.

They said:

  • Reading and taking notes from what they read.
  • Networking with other CEOs to discuss challenges and explore opportunities.
  • Having a mentor.
  • Working with an executive coach and offsite training sessions together with their executive team.

6 CEOs provided me with comments along these lines.

  • I had to do a lot of training to get where I am today. I have done all that stuff already.
  • Middle management and the workforce need the training but I don’t engage in training activities anymore.
  • I hated this stuff when I was young. Thank goodness I don’t have to do this anymore.
  • Leadership Training is something for newbies but not for Top Level Executives.
  • I coach my Management Team. They learn from me, and their team learns from them. We can do all of this ourselves.
  • I don’t have the time to go for training.

Interesting right?

People are different and their leadership style is different. The higher people rank in organizations, the more difficult it will be to find another job when they lose theirs. That’s why it is so critical to stay at the top of your game at all times. When executives are hired, companies usually look for new and innovative approaches. Having people, communication and leadership skills are very high on that list.

Here are my insights:

  • If you get all the results you want to see, please keep doing what you’re doing. If not, apply a different approach.
  • Be aware that when you think you know everything, it will prevent you from taking in new information. You never want to be the smartest person in the room or a legend in your own mind.
  • If you want people to change, you have to change. If you want people to get better, you have to get better. This should never end.
  • There is a great book by Marshall Goldsmith that I can highly recommend. Title: What Got You Here, Won’t Get You There
  • Be aware of the destination disease – many people think they have “arrived” – don’t be one of them

Life is about living and learning new things. If you ignore that, it will prevent you from living life well.

Food for Thought:

How do you make sure that you reach your full potential? Do you feel that you’re living your best life (and I am not talking money)?
