I hear so many voices in the industry. The demands on managers and their teams are tremendous, and everything has to be done with a sense of urgency.

Many work environments carry a touch of toxicity, and people don’t even notice how frustration and negativity have taken over their lives.

Sometimes, you have to go slow in order to go fast.

What do I mean by that?

If I look at the members of a team and they’re not performing as they should, I know they are a reflection of their manager.

Self-reflection can be a very powerful tool. I’m not saying you should beat yourself up (we do too much of that every single day) – rather, it’s about recognizing what you can learn and do differently to become the best possible leader for your team.

Regular one-on-ones might not always be top of mind when things get hectic, but they’re absolutely essential.

One-on-Ones…

  1. build trust and connection – Taking the time to meet one-on-one shows your team you genuinely care about them and their challenges.

  2. create space for timely feedback – Recognize what’s going well and address issues before they grow.

  3. fuel growth and development – These meetings are your opportunity to coach, mentor, and help your team reach their full potential.

How can your team improve if they don’t know where they stand?

We give feedback for two reasons:

1. Positive reinforcement — acknowledging what someone does well. YES, you have to tell them.

2. Improvement tips — showing how you can help team members grow and do better without diminishing their self-worth.

If you want your team to get better, you have to get better first. The best athletes in the world all work with a coach. I know I’m biased, but seriously: what’s holding you back from hiring one to stay at the top of your game?

The toughest people on your team are actually your greatest teachers, because they challenge you to demonstrate your true leadership and influencing skills.

Go for it! You’re exactly where you are for a reason, and you have everything it takes to keep growing.
