Manufacture Your Day by ASKING BETTER QUESTIONS

Manufacturing Leadership Creative Mind

There are many types of questions but today I want to focus on 3 of them to increase your awareness.

People in leadership positions often don’t achieve the expected results because they work with statements rather than questions.

When you ask a question it is important to come from a place of curiosity and not from a place of judgment.

Mistakes happen. Deadlines are missed. Problems aren’t seen as opportunities. Conflicts are not handled well. Customers move on to someone else. Employees find a different job.

This is life and as long as we learn from any given situation, it can rarely be a true loss.

Learner Questions:

These questions come from a place of being open-minded, curious and creative. We ask with the goal of learning rather than judging. They are less accusing and more empowering.

Examples:

  • What can we learn from this situation?
  • What is one thing I can do better for you?

Divergent Questions:

They have no right or wrong answers but rather encourage open discussion.

Examples:

  • What do you think would happen if we increased our productivity by 10%?
  • What are your thoughts on how can we improve our internal customer service?

Lazy Questions:

There are no bad questions but there are lazy ones. There is not much thought that goes into a lazy question and they can be very superficial rather than explorative.

Examples:

  • Why is this process in place?
  • Where can I find that information?

Do you believe that the skill of asking good questions with a mindset to explore and to learn is tremendously underrated in our work environments?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

How skilled are you when it comes to asking questions?
