Is it only me or do you notice as well HOW (tone and body language) some people speak with each other and about each other?
Yes, there are times when it can get REALLY ugly. If emotions are high, intelligence is low.
Why do people display these emotional and disrespectful behaviours at work and at home? The answer is stress. Stress can turn the nicest person into a beast if he/she doesn’t have a mental strategy in place. That’s when we fall into our “default operating system”.
Unfortunately most people don’t have the tools and techniques to control their emotional response and that’s how it can get out of hand.
Why do we allow people to be disrespectful at work? Do we believe that they have “earned the right”?
Nobody comes to work to be yelled at or belittled but everyone is busy and most managers won’t make the time (or don’t even know how) to address this kind of behaviour.
The worst behaviour you see in your workplace is there because it is accepted and nobody does anything about it.
This is the sad reality.
How can this be a performance enhancing recipe?
We all know that we cannot change other people but here is what I want YOU to focus on:
- Take a deep breath and think before you speak – is it kind, is it helpful, is it necessary, is it honest?
- Be interested instead of interesting – ask open-ended questions and make a sincere effort to understand where the other person is coming from.
- Apply basic life skills – say hello, please and thank you at all times.
- Address people by their first name – you won’t believe the difference this will make.
