Every negative emotion has a purpose. There are times when we feel frustrated or angry, and there are times when we feel sad. That’s o.k.
What’s not okay is when negative emotions turn into a daily habit. It’s easy to get pulled into negativity and become one of the angry people you see at work every day.
Recently, I went for a run with my running group on a quiet neighbourhood road. It was 6 a.m., and it was snowing. Suddenly, a car stopped right beside me, and the driver felt the need to tell me that I was a real idiot.
I was stunned and simply responded with a quick, “Thank you.” What must be going on in someone’s life to feel that frustrated at six o’clock in the morning?
It’s tough to know how to respond in moments like that. I really thought about it. I could have said, “Maybe, but I’m a happy idiot,” or “Good morning to you too.”
However, here’s the deeper truth:
People criticize what they don’t understand.
Snow running represents discipline, resilience, and doing hard things voluntarily. Not everyone relates to that.
The strongest response? Not reacting emotionally at all.
You don’t need approval for the things that make you strong or happy.
When it comes to people at work, it’s the same thing. Some people have a difficult time navigating life in general, but that has nothing to do with you.
Set your boundaries and stay calm. Some people genuinely want to see you upset. Don’t give them that satisfaction.
The real question is: Who do you want controlling your emotional state – you or them?
