What is about us humans that we always expect the worst case scenario?
What makes it so difficult for us to simply expect good things to happen?
Why do we rarely take the time to visualize great results in every aspect of our life?
It is difficult because our brain is wired to look for what’s wrong all day long. If we don’t know better, we are either in fight or in flight mode but that’s not where you want to be. Am I right?
If we do something that we have never done before, feeling fearful of uncertainty is completely normal but we can mentally prepare for the occasion.
Why are positive expectations important?
- You get what you expect – that’s why it is important to make sure to expect great things
- Tell people what you want to see instead of what you don’t (i.e. “be positive” instead of “don’t be negative”; “be on time” instead of “don’t be late”; “be respectful” instead of “don’t be rude”)
- What we believe about ourselves and others can and will influence the outcome
- A positive mental attitude changes everything
- Setting high standards will get you extraordinary results
- Make sure when you communicate expectations that they are based on clarity, empathy and honesty
- Determine the gap between what you expect and the results you get
- The gap between expectations and results will give you the chance to provide feedback, training, coaching
- Positive expectations shift your mindset to assess what is working and what areas can be improved
Here is the thing. Most managers and supervisors think their team members know what’s expected of them. Reality is that many if not most, have no idea what the clear expectations are.
Have you ever thought about how much more powerful it is when you expect something positive to happen rather than hoping for it? Hoping is better than wishing, and expecting is better than hoping.
I can feel it. Can you feel it too?
