Why I Wrote Making Manufacturing Sexy
Today feels a little surreal.
After months of writing, rewriting, questioning, editing—and probably overthinking a few things —Making Manufacturing Sexy: The Mindset Shift from Firefighting to Leading is officially out.
Fourteen years ago, I published my first book, How Can We Make Manufacturing Sexy?
Back then, I was asking a question.
Today, I believe I have a much clearer answer.
Over almost two decades of working with leaders and teams in manufacturing, I have seen incredible advancements. Technology has changed. Automation has changed. Processes have improved.
But there is one area where I believe we still have tremendous untapped potential:
People.
Too many workplaces still operate in constant firefighting mode. Everything is urgent. Everyone is busy. Leaders run from one problem to the next, and eventually we start accepting this as simply “the way manufacturing is.”
But what if it doesn’t have to be?
What if we could create workplaces where people work hard, achieve great results, contribute their ideas—and actually enjoy coming to work?
That, to me, is part of making manufacturing sexy.
And when I say sexy, I mean attractive and desirable.
An industry young people want to join.
Workplaces talented people want to stay in.
Cultures where people have the opportunity to contribute more of what they are capable of.
Today, Adrian and I recorded a special video about why I wrote this book. We talk about the journey from my first book to this one, firefighting, leadership, mindset—and a coaching conversation I had today that reminded me exactly why this message matters.
