Manufacture Your Day by KNOWING THAT YOU DON’T NEED A TITLE TO BE A LEADER
In the US and Canada it is a long weekend as we celebrate Labor Day today. Labor Day (the first Monday in September) is a creation of the labor movement.
That’s why it seems quite appropriate to make some remarks about leadership on a day that is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.
How amazing would it be if people would start understanding that anyone can make a positive difference based on their approach to life.
Would people become more aware about their own attitude?
What if we would hear less whining and complaining?
Could it be that people would start to care more?

I have heard about the concept that you don’t need a title to be leader for the first time through Mark Sanborn‘s book in 2007.
I meet so many people who are hungry for a big title, significance, power and status. They validate themselves by what other people think about them.
I have met many leaders in the manufacturing industry – some have influenced people for the better and others have influenced people for the worse.
Truth to be told, I have spoken to machine operators who have fabulous leadership skills and I have interacted with Managers at all levels who will never be leaders because they simply don’t get the concept of leadership.
Leadership = Influence!
If you understand people’s desires and fears, you have the ability to emotionally move them and create a win-win situations.
People aren’t stupid. They know if someone is sincere or when they are manipulated.
Manipulation is what happens when you influence someone to do something for your own ulterior motive.
It is never about the title. The title gives only authority. That’s it. Simply ask yourself: “Would people truly follow my lead if I wouldn’t have a title?”
Leadership is about having a good character and being able to look in the mirror when you go to bed in the evening. It is character building when you have to deal with situations that test your patience, courage and endurance over and over again.
Here are a few simple ways to demonstrate leadership:
- Say “hello, please and thank you.”
- Stay calm when you feel like screaming.
- Demonstrate respect at all times.
- Listen without interrupting people.
- Hold the door open for the person behind you when you enter a coffee shop.
- Return your shopping cart.
- Leave the toilet as clean as you found it.
- Let another driver into your lane.
- Smile at the person next to you.
Leadership is about leading by example. That’s how you create a ripple effect.
