One of the biggest mistakes we can make is thinking that a great education is a guarantee for a great life.
Most people I know either have money but not enough time, or they have enough time but no money. Can we call this a fulfilling and prosperous life?
Don’t get me wrong, it is important to have a good education but based on my personal experience there are three things that matter so much more than education, and every parent should make sure their children are equipped with it.
1) Self-Worth
Having the ability to love and accept yourself for who you are is priceless. From an early stage in life, we learn to please others – our parents, our teachers, our bosses. However, the most important person you should please is yourself by using all your god given talents. It is all about the story you tell yourself about yourself. Every person should learn to overcome self-doubt and develop unshakable faith in his/her own ability to get through anything. This will help tremendously with following through on all the things that we have always wanted to do. Every person should feel worthy of deserving the best in their life. If you don’t make a plan for your life, you will have to follow someone else’s plan.
Years ago in my early stages of business, someone said to me, “I have an MBA. What title do you have?” I had a good comeback by saying, “I have a GSD. I get stuff done.” I can still remember the blank stare on his face. If you understand that a title doesn’t define the results you will get in your life, it is a true game-changer.
2) Grit
Having passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals is super important in order to develop staying power. People who have grit are interested to get better at what they do and they have an optimistic outlook on things. I have met so many people along the way who are passionate about nothing. They are on autopilot and their life consists of getting up, driving to work, working hard and long hours, driving home, eating and sleeping. How can they be at their best? Do you believe that people on autopilot can help to bring a company to the next level?
That’s why I recommend asking people in a job interview what they enjoy doing in their personal life. This will tell you a lot about their character and what they stand for.
Here are more thoughts on grit.
3) Courage
People who live their lives in constant fear (i.e. management, losing their job, making a mistake, uncertainty, economic state, etc) will have a difficult time making decisions that serve them well. Everyone experiences fear and that’s o.k. because fear is an emotion that protects us from doing crazy things without thinking them through. However, being courageous means feeling fear and finding a way to move from fear to action.
That’s why one of my guiding principles has always been “better an oops” than a “what if”.
The school of life is tough and having good grades in school doesn’t mean anything when it comes to overcoming challenges, dealing with adversity and living life with passion.
