Manufacture Your Day by EXPLORING A GREAT ANALOGY TO THE MEANING OF “FULL POTENTIAL”

The only thing that I would like to change about Charbel Tadros’ quote in the picture above is:
“A highly paid, highly motivated employee who is not allowed to work with his/her full potential is like a Ferrari, which is not allowed out of the garage.” – Charbel Tadros
I often wonder why there aren’t more people who strive to reach their personal best.
Here are a few of the reasons I came up with:
Complacency:
Good is good enough.
Laziness:
People are getting away with a “doing as little as possible” attitude.
Fixed Mindset:
They are convinced they cannot get better.
Destination Disease:
A thought process of “having arrived” at their final destination (i.e. after achieving that position/title).
Not in Control:
These people feel that they live by other people’s rules and that they have no choice.
Lack of Drive:
No desire to improve and become a better person.
Lack of clear Goals:
Not knowing how to set goals or why having a goal is important.
Lack of Passion:
No excitement for life in general (at home and at work).
Lack of Awareness:
These people have never thought about the importance of staying current in a constantly changing world.
Lack of commitment:
Many people want to achieve something but they don’t want to do the work.
Passenger Seat Mentality:
Blaming is so much easier than taking action.
Fear:
Emotional reasons such as fear of failure, limiting beliefs and a non-productive thought process won’t work in anyone’s favour.
I would like to ask you a simple question. Would you like to have a Ferrari if your fear of damaging the car would stop you from driving it? Would you prefer to leave your Ferrari in the garage instead?
The same is true for you and your team members.
When I first started my training company 18+ years ago, somebody said to me, “Karin, if you can survive with your training business in the Toronto area, you will be able to make it anywhere in the world.”
At the time I didn’t think that this was a fair statement to make but today I can say that this has been true. The lack of leadership, communication mental strength, and stress management training in even big organizations has been mind-boggling, to say the least. Many companies had little to no interest in investing in their employees despite the availability of government grants to receive part of the training investment back. Having said this, the mentality in a lot of companies has started to change.
If manufacturing excellence and world-class manufacturing is on their radar, they know that their employees have to learn and grow to meet the growing demands.
How can you help yourself and your team to reach your/their full potential?
1. Self-Awareness
Be aware and show that you care. Being aware and thinking about your improvement opportunities is already a great first step. Many people are simply not aware and/or rarely have the opportunity for a good dialogue about “what’s next” with their boss.
2. Mindfulness
If you are present and think about “what’s next” in your improvement journey, you will avoid being on autopilot. This will help you to monitor your (and others’) progress in the process.
3. Personal Excellence
If we speak about manufacturing excellence, people have to be aware of what personal excellence and professionalism really mean. An important part of this is an ongoing feedback process in order to understand where you and your team stand concerning ongoing improvement. I guess this is content for another day.
Now go and start your engines. Why not become the Ferrari that you were meant to be?
