Manufacture Your Day by DISCOVERING THE SECRET TO HAPPINESS
The question is, “Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?”
The older I get, the more I just want to be happy and keep my peace.
The power struggles I observe or hear about in organizations are quite disturbing. Sometimes I have the feeling it is more like a kindergarten in an adult scene.
Actually, I think children are better. They are more intuitive and open, which makes it easier for them to connect. Have you ever gone in an elevator with a few adults? Isn’t it true that they are really good ignoring each other? They make sure to avoid eye contact so that they don’t have to talk to each other.
When I first came to Toronto I was friendly to everyone. In the subway I sat besides strangers and I said “hello” just to start a conversation. Despite being alone in such a big city, I never felt lonely because of my approach.
After I started to work at Magna a co-worker of mine came with me downtown in the subway. He said, “Karin, people here in Toronto don’t greet strangers. You are not in a small town, you are in a big city. That’s weird behaviour.”
This was almost 16 years ago and I was shocked. It is weird to greet people and be friendly to them? Maybe that’s one of the reasons why our world has started to lose kindness and has become more and more violent.
Today I can tell you that I prefer to be called weird when I am friendly to strangers. It is so much better than feeling awkward and removed from the people around me. I love talking to people, building new connections and with that, I learn something new every day.
Everyone has the ability to make others happy.
Some by entering the room, and some by leaving the room.
Which one are you?
