Manufacture Your Day by BELIEVING IN YOUR LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL
Originally I am from Austria. Whenever someone asks me about the biggest difference between people in North America and Europe, I will say that…
- people in Nordamerica live to work and
- people in Europe work to live.
This is so true. The cultures in countries are different and so are the cultures in companies.
If I would have to pick one thing that is the same in manufacturing companies in any country I have been to, I would say that management focuses too much on numbers and not enough on people.
Let me get this straight. Of course, numbers are important but who is producing the numbers?
Recently I met with someone who works as a project manager in the automotive industry. He told me, “Karin, I have always loved to work in this industry but over the years I have lost all my drive. It has become all about numbers instead of excellence, and due to incompetent individuals in leadership positions, people get pushed to their limits without any positive recognition for their efforts and hard work.”
Sad perspective, isn’t it? Many people in leadership positions are not incompetent but more often than not, they are not aware of what impact their communication style has on others.
I can relate to management because it can be very frustrating when people don’t do what you want them to do. However, our work history with leadership teams has shown that increased awareness of how to lead people and a different approach can lead to incredible results.
Why do I say “can”?
Some managers are neither ready nor willing to put in the “leadership work”, which is necessary to get where they want to be. Sometimes they also tell me that they are too “busy” to provide ongoing constructive feedback to their team members.
Don’t shoot the messenger but your quarterly results (KPIs) tell a clear story of how you’re doing as a leader. These numbers demonstrate clearly what works and what doesn’t.
You don’t have to do it alone. If you are humble enough to ask for help, you will receive all the answers.
In other words, if I train for a marathon, I can have the best coach/trainer but it is me who has to follow the training plan to get the expected results. Nobody else is putting in the mileage except me, myself and I. The same is true in business.
Your leadership potential (with or without a title) is unlimited. Just remember that.
Food for Thought:
Do you think you have people in the company you work for (or own) who possess more talent, skill and creativity than their current job allows them to demonstrate?
Most companies are sitting on a goldmine without recognizing it. Just saying.
