Manufacturing Training Leadership Potential

It’s Wednesday and it’s time for our “Manufacturing Leadership Minute” with Karin and Adrian.

I am originally from Austria. Whenever someone asks me about the biggest difference between people in North America and those in Europe, I say that people in North America live to work, whereas people in Europe work to live.

There is a lot of truth to that. Cultures differ from country to country, and the same is true for companies.

If I had to pick one thing that seems consistent across almost every manufacturing company I’ve visited around the world, it would be that management focuses too much on numbers and not enough on people.

Let me be clear. Of course, numbers are important, but who produces the numbers?

Recently, I met with someone who works as a project manager in the automotive industry. He told me:

“Karin, I have always loved working in this industry, but over the years I have lost all my drive. It has become all about numbers instead of excellence, and due to incompetent individuals in leadership positions, people are pushed to their limits without any positive recognition for their efforts and hard work.”

Sad perspective, isn’t it?

Many people in leadership positions are not incompetent. However, more often than not, they are simply not aware of the impact their communication style has on others.

That said, I can relate to management because it can be very frustrating when people don’t do what you want them to do. At the same time, our work with leadership teams has shown that increased awareness of how to lead people – combined with a different approach – can lead to incredible results.

Why do I say “can”?

Some managers are neither ready nor willing to put in the “leadership work” that is necessary to get to the next level. Sometimes they also tell me that they are too “busy” to provide ongoing constructive feedback to their team members.

Don’t shoot the messenger, but your quarterly results (KPIs) tell a clear story about how you are doing as a leader. These numbers clearly demonstrate what works and what doesn’t.

You don’t have to do it alone. If you are humble enough to ask for help, you will receive the answers you need.

In other words, if I train for a marathon, I can have the best coach or trainer, but it is still up to me to follow the training plan to get the expected results. Nobody else is putting in the mileage except me, myself, and I. The same is true in business.

Your leadership potential (whether you have a title or not) is unlimited. Just remember that.

Food for Thought:

Do you think you have people in the company you work for (or own) who possess more talent, skill and creativity than their current job allows them to demonstrate?

Most companies are sitting on a goldmine without recognizing it. Just saying.
