Manufacturing Leadership Kindness Matters

It’s Wednesday and it’s time for your “Manufacturing Leadership Minute” with Karin.

September is such a transitional month as it is World Suicide Prevention Month… S.A.D. is real.

“Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same time every year. If you’re like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.” ~ quoted from the Mayo Clinic

Did you know that according to the first-ever “2017 Workplace Wellness Report: Mind the Workplace”, the manufacturing industry ranked amongst the worst for mental health in the workplace?

Adding Covid-19 (for some people there is still a lot of anxiety around Covid) into this mix, the fall and winter months can become really challenging for people. Employers have to consider different options to keep their team members mentally, emotionally and physically healthy.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Show a sincere interest in people
  • Build rapport and meaningful relationships with your team members
  • Watch your language: words can lift people or they can put them down
  • Encourage people to be active and spend time outside (this will strengthen their immune system)
  • Become more observant of people’s faces and actions (if someone looks a little bit off or seems extremely frustrated/angry, make the time for a good dialogue)
  • Be curious rather than furious (we often have no idea what’s going on in people’s lives)
  • Provide training to help people develop mental strategies
  • Offer lunch and learn sessions for the workforce on how to manage their finances, the importance of healthy nutrition and stress management
  • Tell team members that it is o.k. to ask for help
  • Empathy: Ask people how they feel and if everything is o.k. at home
  • Be helpful and supportive
  • Listen wholeheartedly
  • Embrace optimism and encourage optimism
  • Get to know people’s “pain” points
  • Offer an employee assistance program and regularly explain the benefits of using it

We all have our own battles to fight, and that’s why we need more kind people in our work environments.

Have you ever noticed that we are kinder when someone has a “handicapped” or “baby on board” sign in the car? This definitely impacts our level of patience and tolerance.

Why is it so difficult to be kind for no reason?

Today I would like to ask you to think before you speak:

Ask yourself: Is it…

  • kind?
  • necessary?
  • helpful?

Step into your awesomeness by allowing kindness to be your guide.
