What would happen if we would make fewer assumptions about others?

The amount of corporate gossip and negativity is a burden for organizations, yet leaders are often not able to get to the bottom of it.

Let me be clear, I think it is very important to have a helpful and kind attitude towards others.

However, you do not help anyone by being the sounding board for their complaints.

Today I want to give you 3 strategies for different scenarios:

  1. Negativity breeds Negativity: People may come to you and complain about new tasks, different people, upcoming changes, you name it… Please do not participate in this energy deprivation activity. Your response: “Sorry, I don’t like to complain behind people’s back” or “Have you talked to the person directly?” or “Have you noticed that you’re really negative lately? How do you think this affects the results you get in your life?”
  2. Assumptions are not Facts: Have you ever been jealous about someone else’s life? Don’t be. Things that may “look good” on the outside do not tell you everything. You have absolutely no idea what’s going on in people’s lives, except when you sit down with the person and have a good conversation. If you opt not to do that, shut up this little voice in your head. Deal?
  3. Corporate Gossip: A lot of problems will start to disappear if more people make the conscious decision to speak to each other instead of about each other. If you are leader, it makes it even worse. Learn to give constructive feedback instead.
