Over the years I have worked with so many people and one of my biggest insights has been that everyone has fears. The difference is how people deal with it when they become fearful.

  • Some won’t even start trying anything new because they are so good at talking themselves out of it.
  • Others feel the fear and do it anyway.
  • Then there are the ones who are paralyzed by fear but they have never thought that there may be tools and techniques to overcome it.

How often is fear an illusion that is created in our mind but never becomes a reality?

It has been said that there are no people who are not resourceful, there are only unresourceful emotional states. Fear is one of the states that will make you unresourceful.

Here is how I overcame cynophobia – my fear of dogs – and how this can be important information for you.

When I was about 6 years old, a young German Sheppard playfully jumped on me and shredded my sweater. It was our neighbour’s dog and from that moment on I developed a phobia. Whenever I saw a dog or heard one barking, I freaked out.

This fear stayed with me until I was almost 23 years old. Eventually, I started to feel silly when my fear of dogs stopped me from doing things that I wanted to do and I decided to do something about it.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to do, but the first step was to face this fear head-0n.

I created my own personal mantra that I repeated all the time when I saw a dog by saying… “Dogs are only scary when I am scared. I am courageous. I am calm.”

It became important to me to practice being courageous by no longer avoiding dogs. I looked at them, I smiled at them, I didn’t back off.

Eventually, my cynophobia was no longer a phobia. I started to like dogs and I felt free.

Little did I know at the time that being so determined to overcome this fear has helped me to deal with other fearful situations in a very different way.

Your goal shouldn’t be to have no fears. The goal should be to face your fears and deal with them accordingly.

Some will, some won’t, will you?
